Guacamole Recipe (Simple & Homemade)

This simple homemade guacamole blends ripe avocado with finely chopped onion, optional tomato, and serrano or jalapeño peppers for heat. Additional flavors come from garlic, black pepper, lemon juice, olive oil, and cilantro, creating a creamy and mildly spicy dip that pairs well with chips, toast, or Mexican dishes.

Description

The guacamole uses ripe avocado mashed together with finely chopped onion and optionally tomato, providing fresh texture and brightness. Chopped serrano, jalapeño, or green chilies add adjustable heat according to preference. Additional seasoning includes finely minced garlic, freshly crushed black pepper, lemon juice, and olive oil that contribute aroma and balance. Fresh cilantro mixed in adds herbal depth and a slightly citrus note.

Mixing all ingredients thoroughly while mashing the avocado results in a creamy, slightly chunky dip with vibrant flavors and moderate spice. Garnishing with more chopped coriander leaves adds freshness and appeal for serving.

Serve guacamole with chips, toast, or use as an accompaniment for burritos and quesadillas. Leftovers can be stored in an air-tight container with a thin layer of olive oil or lemon juice on top to minimize oxidation and keep the guacamole fresh for up to 2 days.

Taste and seasoning can be adjusted during preparation to suit individual preferences. Optional ingredients like cucumber or bell pepper may be added for extra crunch.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 avocado - ripened
  • ¼ cup onion finely chopped) or 1 small onion
  • ¼ cup tomato finely chopped) or 1 small tomato, optional
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon Serrano peppers (finely chopped) or jalapeño pepper or green chillies
  • ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon garlic (finely chopped or minced) or 1 small garlic clove, optional
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper or ground black pepper - add as required, crushed
  • 2 tablespoons cilantro coriander leaves, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice or add as required
  • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
  • salt as required - can use edible rock salt, black salt, kosher salt or crushed sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander leaves (chopped) for garnish, optional

Instructions

Make Guacamole

  1. Cut the avocado into two equal parts. Remove the ripe pulp with a spoon in a small mixing bowl.
  2. Mix it with the rest of the chopped ingredients, salt, olive oil and lemon juice.
  3. Add the seasonings - salt and freshly crushed black pepper. You can even opt to chop the avocado pulp and then mix with the remaining ingredients.
  4. Thoroughly mix all the fresh ingredients with a spoon. Mash the avocado while mixing.
  5. Serve this best, homemade and simple Guacamole with toast, tortilla chips, nachos or as an accompaniment with a burrito or quesadilla.
  6. You can garnish with chopped coriander leaves while serving.

Storage

  1. If you have any leftovers, put them in a small air-tight container and make the surface smooth. Cover it with a thin layer of olive oil or a bit of lemon juice to keep air away. Seal with the lid.
  2. When you're ready to eat it, you can either mix in the oil/juice or pour it off. If you do this right, your guacamole can stay fresh for up to 2 days.

Notes

  • Use ripe avocados for best texture and flavor; ripen unripe ones in a paper bag at room temperature.
  • The recipe serves approximately 2 and scales well for larger groups.
  • Adjust the type and amount of peppers to control spiciness; more serrano or jalapeño increases heat.
  • Fresh herbs like parsley can replace cilantro, or use dried herbs if fresh are unavailable.
  • Leftovers keep fresh up to 2 days when covered with a thin layer of olive oil or lemon juice in a sealed container.
