Halloween Bark
Description
This recipe involves carefully melting chocolate chips in layers on a lined cookie sheet at a low oven temperature. Once the chocolate starts to melt and shine, it’s smoothed and topped with half of the candies including pretzels and colorful M&M's or Reese’s Pieces. After adding another layer of melting chocolate and more candy, the bark is left at room temperature to harden fully before breaking into pieces.
The bark balances sweet, salty, and crunchy elements. The slight baking step gently melts the chocolate, allowing a thicker, more textured bark compared to simple melted-and-chilled bark. The inclusion of pretzels adds saltiness and crunch, which contrasts with the sweetness of candy corn, M&M's, and other candies used.
This bark is suitable for Halloween parties or as a festive treat to share. Pieces can be packaged or displayed easily, making it a seasonal confection to complement other holiday desserts or snacks.
Melting chocolate can also be done on the stovetop or microwave using careful low heat and stirring to prevent burning. Removing the chocolate just before fully melted and stirring to finish melting avoids graininess.
Ingredients
- 24 ounces chocolate chips about 2 packages - any flavor
- 1 cup pretzels
- 1/2 cup M&M's fall colored or Reese's Pieces
- 1/2 cup candy corn
- 1/2 cup candy bars or any kind of candy you want!
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with wax paper or baking paper. Pour out the first bag of chocolate chips so that they are close together but not stacked on top of each other.
- Put the cookie sheet in the oven, and watch closely. When chocolate chips begin to look shiny and just starting to melt, pull tray out and smooth the chocolate out with a spatula.
- Sprinkle on half of your candies then layer on the second bag of chocolate chips. Put in the oven again and when the second layer of chocolate chips begin to look shiny and a little melty, remove, smooth out chocolate, and sprinkle on more candy.
- Let the bark sit out at room temperature until completely hardened. Break the bark into serving size pieces and place onto a serving plate or bowl.
Notes
- Chocolate can be melted on stove or microwave heating slowly and stirring frequently to avoid burning.
- Remove chocolate from heat just before fully melted; stir to finish melting smoothly.
- Allow bark to harden completely at room temperature before breaking to ensure clean pieces.
