Halloween Sprinkle Cookies
Description
This cookie recipe melts butter and mixes it with granulated and brown sugars before incorporating vanilla and a whole egg, creating a rich, sweet base. Dry ingredients including flour, baking soda, and salt are added with care not to overmix, which helps maintain a soft texture. The dough is slightly sticky but manageable with a medium cookie scoop.
The tops of the dough balls are coated softly with sprinkles, avoiding complete coverage to prevent melting and mess during baking. Baked at 350°F for 7–10 minutes until set but still slightly underbaked in the center, the cookies emerge tender and puffy with a subtle chewiness.
This recipe offers notes on measuring flour properly to avoid dryness and recommendations on sprinkle types for best results. The cookies are great festive treats that balance a soft crumb with decorative appeal.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar packed
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 egg large
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 F.
- Microwave the butter for about 40 seconds. Butter should be completely melted but shouldn't be hot.
- In a large bowl, mix butter with the sugars until well-combined.
- Stir in vanilla and egg until incorporated.
- Add the flour, baking soda, and salt. Please read the recipe note about properly measuring flour.
- Mix dough until just combined. Dough should be soft and a little sticky but not overly sticky.
- Scoop out 1.5 tablespoons of dough (medium cookie scoop).
- Roll the tops (just the tops) in sprinkles, and place 2 inches apart on baking sheet.
- Bake for 7-10 minutes, or until cookies are set. They will be puffy and still look a little underbaked in the middle.
Notes
- Measure flour by fluffing, scooping, and leveling to avoid dry, crumbly cookies.
- Use simple sprinkle mixes rather than candy-coated types to prevent melting during baking.
- Only coat about half of each cookie's top in sprinkles to minimize melting and spreading of colors.
- Monitor baking time closely; start with 7 minutes and add time if needed, avoiding overbaking for softness.
