Halloween Strawberry Monsters
Description
This recipe transforms ripe strawberries into Halloween-themed monsters using colored fondant and candy eyes. The strawberries are prepared by trimming their tops so they stand upright. White fondant is dyed black to create small mouth shapes, and tiny white fondant triangles form teeth. These elements are adhered together with a little water, then attached to the strawberries along with candy eyes using white decorating icing as glue.
The visual contrast between the red berries, black and white fondant, and candy eyes gives each strawberry a characterful monster face. This makes them fun snacks or novelty dessert decorations ideal for Halloween parties or seasonal celebrations.
The use of fondant allows for clean, flexible sculpting of mouth and teeth shapes, while the fresh strawberries provide natural sweetness and a juicy texture. The decoration requires some careful handiwork but can be done ahead of time, storing the decorated strawberries in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before serving.
Ingredients
- 12 strawberries ripe
- 2 ounces white fondant (50g)
- black food coloring gel Or use store bought black fondant
- ⅓ cup powdered sugar icing sugar
- white writing icing tube
- 12 Candy eyes
Instructions
- Cut the tops off the strawberries so they stand with the pointed tip facing up.
- Add a drop or two of black food coloring gel to half of the fondant icing and knead, adding more gel if necessary to more to make it black.
- Lightly dust the work surface with icing sugar and roll the white and black fondant out separately.
- Cut ovals small enough to fit onto the strawberries out of the black fondant.
- Cut small triangle ‘teeth’ out of the white fondant.
- Use a little water on your finger to ‘glue’ the teeth to the black ovals. When they’re stuck together, glue the mouths to the strawberries with the writing icing along with the candy eyes on top.
Notes
- Choose bright red, ripe strawberries, preferably larger ones for easier decorating.
- Make black fondant by kneading white fondant with black food coloring gel until evenly colored, or purchase black fondant.
- If decorating icing is unavailable, use a bit of water or melted chocolate to attach fondant pieces and candy eyes.
- Dust your work surface with icing sugar to prevent fondant from sticking while rolling and cutting.
- Prepare strawberries and store in refrigerator for up to 24 hours before adding decorations if making ahead.
