Halloween Walnuts
Description
Halloween Walnuts are made by dipping walnut halves into melted candy melts in seasonal colors and adding themed decorations like green M&M's for pumpkin stems or candy eyes for mummies and monsters. The process involves melting the candy melts gently and evenly coating the walnuts before placing decorative elements on top while the coating is still soft. After refrigeration, the candy sets into a firm but smooth shell around the crunchy walnut halves.
These nuts deliver a combination of the nutty crunch from walnuts and the sweet, creamy texture of melted candy coating in Halloween-inspired designs. The use of candy melts rather than chocolate provides a consistent, quick-setting coating that holds the decorations well.
This recipe is ideal for holiday party favors, treats for kids, or themed gift packaging. The small bite size makes them convenient for snacking or sharing during Halloween festivities, adding a playful sweet and nutty component to the seasonal treats.
Store these candies covered in the refrigerator for up to two weeks to maintain freshness. Using candy melts simplifies the melting and setting process, providing a smooth, colorful coating without the tempering process typical of chocolate. Candy eyes and colored candy melts are specialty items often found in baking or craft stores during Halloween season.
Ingredients
For pumpkins:
- 12 ounces Candy Melts see note 1, orange
- 12 ounces walnuts (halves)
- M&M's green
For mummies:
- 12 ounces white candy melts
- 12 ounces walnuts (halves)
- Candy eyes (see note 2)
For monsters:
- 12 ounces green candy melts
- 12 ounces walnuts (halves)
- Candy eyes
Instructions
To melt the candy melts:
- Line a plate or baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper (something that will fit in your refrigerator).
- In a microwave-safe bowl, microwave candy melts at 40% power or defrost setting for 1 minute. Stir thoroughly. Continue to microwave and stir at 30-second intervals until smooth and completely melted.
For pumpkin candies:
- Dip walnut halves into melted orange candy melts and transfer to parchment paper. While the chocolate is still melted, add a green chocolate candy to one end for the "stem." Refrigerate until the candy is set, about 30 minutes.
For mummy candies:
- Dip walnut halves into melted white candy melts and transfer to parchment paper. Using a spoon, drizzle more white chocolate over the walnuts to create the look of "bandages." While the chocolate is still melted, add googly eye candies. Refrigerate until the candy is set, about 30 minutes.
For monster candies:
- Dip walnut halves into melted green candy melts and transfer to parchment paper. While the chocolate is still melted, add googly eye candies. Refrigerate until the candy is set, about 30 minutes.
Notes
- Store finished Halloween Walnuts covered in the refrigerator to keep fresh for up to two weeks.
- Candy melts set quickly and smoothly without tempering, making them convenient for coating nuts.
- Use candy eyes and colored candy melts purchased from baking or craft stores to create festive decorations.
- The recipe yields approximately 36 ounces total, divided among pumpkin, mummy, and monster varieties.
