Ham and Cheese Sliders on Hawaiian Rolls
Description
Ham and Cheese Sliders on Hawaiian Rolls combine thinly sliced deli ham and Swiss cheese inside Hawaiian sweet rolls, which provide a soft and slightly sweet base. The key component is the butter mixture that includes poppy seeds, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and grated onion. This blend is spread inside the rolls to add depth of flavor and a slightly tangy sweetness that complements the saltiness of the ham and the mildness of the Swiss cheese.
The sliders are assembled by layering ham and cheese between the roll halves spread with the flavorful butter, then placed close together in a baking dish and covered with foil. Baking melts the cheese and allows the flavors to meld while keeping the rolls soft. This method creates a moist and savory slider with a slight tang from the mustard and sweetness from the brown sugar and Hawaiian rolls.
These sliders are good for casual occasions or meal prep, pairing well with simple sides or as finger food. Variations in cheese or meat can adjust the flavor profile, and the recipe allows some flexibility with spreads and toppings.
For ease of preparation, butter should be softened before mixing to achieve a smooth spread. The onion is best finely grated to blend evenly without large chunks. Make-ahead options include refrigerating assembled sliders covered or freezing them, which makes this recipe convenient for events or quick meals.
Ingredients
- 1 tick butter softened at room temperature, salted, ½ cup
- 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
- 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ small onion finely grated
- 1 (12 oz) King’s Hawaiian Rolls halved horizontally with a serrated knife, package
- 12 lices ham thinly sliced, deli-style
- 3 lices swiss cheese cut into 12 squares, or cheddar or American cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a large baking dish (about 9 x 13 inches) with cooking spray; set aside.
- In a small bowl, stir together butter, poppy seeds, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion.
- Split open a roll and spread butter mixture on the top and bottom of the inside of the roll.
- Add 1 slice of ham and 1 square of cheese; replace the top of the roll to make a sandwich. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
- Place sliders close together in the prepared baking dish. Cover with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, or until cheese melts.
Notes
- Melt the butter mixture and pour over assembled sliders before refrigerating for several hours to enhance flavor penetration before baking.
- Dijon mustard can replace yellow mustard to add a zesty note to the butter spread.
- Feel free to swap ham and Swiss cheese with other deli meats like roast beef or turkey and cheeses such as American or cheddar.
- Choose slider buns such as King's Hawaiian, potato rolls, or plain dinner rolls depending on preference.
- Assemble sliders ahead of time, cover tightly, and store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours or freeze up to 3 months for convenience.
- Use the smallest side of a box grater to finely grate the onion to prevent uneven chunks in the butter mixture.
