Ham Bean Soup

Ham Bean Soup blends cooked ham, white beans, and aromatic vegetables into a hearty, comforting soup. The base develops flavor as ham and vegetables sauté before simmering with chicken stock and herbs. The white beans add creaminess and texture, while parsley and bay leaves bring freshness. This soup offers a warming meal rich in savory flavors and can be finished with homemade ham broth for extra depth.

Description

Ham Bean Soup starts by softening onion, carrot, and celery in olive oil to build a flavor foundation. Garlic adds aroma before shredded ham is added to infuse the mix with smoky notes. Chicken stock and bay leaves (or fresh thyme) combine with chopped parsley, creating a fragrant stew to simmer briefly. White beans, once added, contribute body and gentle creaminess, while black pepper and optional salt season the soup to taste.

This soup is warming and filling, making it suitable for a main course during cooler weather or as a nourishing meal at any time. It can be served with crusty bread or a simple side salad. For added richness, homemade ham broth made by simmering a ham bone can replace the chicken stock, deepening the soup’s smoky dimensions.

The soup can be gently reheated and tastes well on subsequent days as flavors meld. Adjust seasoning after reheating, as beans continue to absorb liquid and salt. This recipe makes a savory, satisfying dish that highlights leftover ham effectively.

  • 1 ½ quarts chicken stock you can use beef, or broth, 1 ½ litres
  • 2 bay leaves (or 1 tablespoon fresh chopped thyme)
  • 3 tablespoons parsley chopped fresh flat-leaf
  • 4 (15 ounce) White beans rinsed and drained, cannellini beans, canned, no salt added
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • salt if needed, pinch

Instructions

  2. Add the ham and cook for a further 2 minutes, then pour in the stock. Add the bay leaves (or thyme) and parsley. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes to combine all of the flavours together.
  3. Stir in beans and season with pepper. Let simmer for 2 minutes, taste test and season with salt if needed.

Notes

  • Simmer leftover ham bone in water for about an hour to create homemade ham broth as a flavorful stock substitute.
  • Use homemade ham broth in place of chicken stock to deepen soup flavor.
  • Reheat gently and adjust seasoning before serving to maintain balance.
