Healthy French Toast
Description
Healthy French Toast starts with whole wheat bread slices dipped into a custard comprising eggs, skimmed milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and the juice and zest of half an orange. The orange adds a subtle citrus brightness and aroma. Cooking the soaked bread in butter over a few minutes on each side results in toast with a lightly crisp exterior and tender center, infused with the combined spices and orange flavor.
The use of whole wheat bread provides more fiber than white bread, and skimmed milk reduces fat content, aligning with a 'healthy' approach. The cinnamon and nutmeg add warm spice elements, complemented by maple syrup sweetness and vanilla fragrance. The recipe's balance of ingredients ensures the French toast maintains moisture without becoming soggy or heavy.
This dish suits a breakfast or brunch setting where a warm, fragrant, and modestly sweet preparation is desired. It can be served as is or with additional toppings as preferred.
freezer storage and toddler-friendly adaptations are suggested in the notes for extra utility and variation.
Ingredients
- 4 lice whole wheat bread
- 2 egg
- 200 ml skimmed milk
- 0.5 teaspoon cinnamon
- 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 0.5 orange juice and zest only
- 0.5 tablespoon butter
Instructions
- Add 2 Eggs, 200 ml Skimmed milk, 0.5 teaspoon Cinnamon, 0.5 teaspoon Ground nutmeg, 0.5 teaspoon Vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon Maple syrup and the juice and zest of 0.5 Orange to a bowl and mix well.

- Add 0.5 tablespoon Butter to a pan and add the soaked slices of bread. Cook for around 2-3 minutes on each side, turned every minute or so.
Notes
- Allow cooked French toast to cool before individually wrapping and freezing; reheat in a toaster after defrosting.
- Using slightly stale bread helps prevent sogginess during soaking and cooking.
- For toddlers, omit the maple syrup and cut the toast into sticks for easier handling.
- Replace whole eggs with egg whites only to reduce calories and fat content further.
