Healthy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce
Description
Healthy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce starts with ground beef browned with garlic to build a meaty base. Tomato puree and diced tomatoes with juice add body and acidity, enhanced by lemon juice and balanced with salt. Olive oil enriches the sauce, while oregano, basil, thyme, and crushed red pepper flakes introduce herbaceous and subtle heat notes.
The sauce is brought to a low boil then simmered uncovered for 45 minutes to reduce excess moisture and concentrate flavors. This process yields a thick, hearty sauce ideal for coating pasta. The balance of herbs and spices with beef provides a robust yet approachable flavor profile.
This sauce can be served immediately over pasta with added parmesan and fresh parsley, or cooled and stored in freezer-safe containers. The recipe notes that longer simmering can help further thicken the sauce if desired, or tomato paste can be added for additional thickness.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 3 teaspoons garlic minced
- 2 cans tomato puree 29 ounces each
- 2 cans diced tomatoes 14.5 ounces each, with juice
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 teaspoons oregano dried
- 2 teaspoons basil dried
- 1 teaspoon thyme dried leaves
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes crushed
Instructions
- In a large saucepan or pot on the stove, brown the ground beef over medium heat along with the garlic. Drain off any fat.1 1/2 pounds ground beef, 3 teaspoons minced garlic
- Add in the rest of the ingredients and bring to a low boil. Stir often. 2 cans tomato puree, 2 cans diced tomatoes, with juice, 2 teaspoons salt, 2 teaspoons lemon juice, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 teaspoons dried oregano, 2 teaspoons dried basil, 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves, 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- Once the sauce is heated through and at a low boil, reduce the burner temperature to low and simmer uncovered for 45 minutes. This will allow some of the moisture to evaporate out, making your sauce thicker.
- Serve immediately over pasta and sprinkle with parmesan cheese and fresh parsley. Or allow the sauce to cool, then package it in freezer-safe containers for easy storage.
Notes
- Simmer the sauce longer on low heat uncovered to thicken naturally without adding extra ingredients.
- Adding a tablespoon or two of tomato paste is an alternative way to thicken the sauce.
- The recipe yields about 2.5 quarts of sauce; one serving is approximately 1/2 cup.
