Healthy Hot Chocolate Recipe

Healthy Hot Chocolate is made by heating almond milk with raw cacao powder, pure maple syrup, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt. This warm beverage offers a balanced cocoa flavor with natural sweetness and a hint of vanilla, without added processed sugars or dairy.

Description

This homemade hot chocolate uses almond milk as a base combined with raw cacao powder for a rich chocolate taste while keeping the drink dairy-free. Maple syrup adds gentle sweetness, balanced by a small amount of vanilla extract and sea salt which enhance depth of flavor. The mixture is whisked over medium heat until smooth and warmed to the desired temperature without boiling, preserving the smooth texture.

The resulting drink is creamy but lighter than traditional hot chocolate made with milk and sugar. Its flavor can be adjusted by adding more cocoa powder for intensity or additional maple syrup for sweetness. It can be served plain or topped with coconut whipped cream or shaved chocolate, as preferred.

Any milk substitute can be used, though homemade oat milk is not recommended due to texture changes when heated. The recipe notes that store-bought oat milk is acceptable.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup almond milk (or milk of choice)
  • 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
  • 1 Tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt fine sea salt

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat and stir, using a whisk to break up any lumps. Keep stirring until it's smooth and reaches your desired warm temperature. (There is no need to bring it to a full boil.)
  2. Carefully taste the hot chocolate and make any necessary adjustments. For a darker chocolate flavor, add an extra dash of cocoa powder. For more sweetness, add an extra splash of maple syrup.
  3. Pour the hot chocolate into a mug right away and serve warm. Top with coconut whipped cream and chocolate shavings, if desired, or any other toppings you love.

Notes

  • Nutrition information relates to the entire batch without toppings.
  • Any milk alternative can be used except homemade oat milk, which can become slimy when heated; store-bought oat milk is acceptable.
  • Adjust cocoa powder or maple syrup amounts after tasting to suit your preference.
  • Serve immediately after warming for best flavor and texture.
