Healthy Nutella Spread

Healthy Nutella Spread blends nut butter, cocoa powder, maple syrup, and vanilla extracts into a smooth, chocolate-hazelnut flavored spread. It offers a lighter alternative to traditional Nutella with the option to adjust thickness by chilling or adding water. Suitable for nut-free diets with sunflower butter substitution.

Description

This Healthy Nutella Spread recipe combines a nut butter base with cocoa powder, maple syrup, and extracts to mimic the flavor profile of classic Nutella in a healthier form. Using hazelnut butter provides the most similar taste, but cashew, almond, peanut, or sunflower butter can also be used depending on preference or allergy needs.

The spread is simply whisked together and can be stored at room temperature or refrigerated for up to two weeks. Adding more water thins the spread, while chilling thickens it, allowing customization of texture for spreading or dipping.

It suits a variety of dietary preferences by swapping nut butters for nut-free alternatives and sweeteners according to taste. This makes it a versatile option for homemade chocolate spreads with less sugar and preservatives than store-bought versions.

Notes mention that regular cocoa powder performs better than dark cocoa powder in achieving the desired flavor and that refrigerating for 30 minutes enhances thickness before use.

  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder 35g
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup pure, 80g
  • 2 Tbsp sweetener I used monk fruit, 24g
  • 1 Tbsp water 15g
  • 1.5 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 tsp hazelnut extract
  • 1/2 tsp stevia optional for sweeter spread, liquid form
  • Pinch salt

Instructions

  1. To make healthy nutella spread, add all the ingredients to a small bowl and whisk/stir to combine. Keep stored in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
  2. To make more thin: add more water
  3. To thicken up:let sit in the fridge for a couple of hours.

Notes

  • Use sunflower butter to make a nut-free version of this spread.
  • Add more water to reach a thinner consistency suitable for drizzling or spreading easily.
  • Let the spread chill in the fridge for a couple of hours to thicken for a firmer texture.
  • Hazelnut butter offers the closest flavor to traditional Nutella, though cashew and almond butters work well too.
  • Regular cocoa powder is preferred over dark cocoa powder for balanced flavor.
  • Store the spread refrigerated for up to two weeks to maintain freshness.
