Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 apple Granny Smith, Fuji or Honeycrisp
  • c maple syrup
  • ¾ teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 ½ tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoon date sugar

Instructions

Slice the apples

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  2. Using the paring knife, quarter the apples and remove the apple core. Cut the quarters into ¼-inch thick slices and place them in a bowl.

Prepare the "sauce" for the healthy baked apple slices

  1. In a small bowl mix together maple syrup, almond extract, lemon juice and cinnamon.
  2. Drizzle the maple syrup mixture over the apples and carefully mix it altogether. Transfer the apples into a 2 ½ Qt ceramic casserole dish.

Bake the apples

  1. Bake apples for 30 minutes or until the apple are tender when poked with a knife. Remove baked sliced apples from the oven, liberally sprinkle with date sugar and broil for 5 minutes.
  2. Let the apples cool for 10 minutes and then serve in individual bowls or ramekins with a dollop of ice-cream if desired.

Notes

  • Casserole Dish. Since it's a fat-free recipe, it's best to use ceramic casserole dish where the apples won't stick and there's no need to grease the dish prior to baking.
  • Refrigerator. If you have leftovers of roasted apple slices, they can keep for about 2 hours on the counter. Otherwise, store them in the airtight container in the fridge for about 3-4 days.
  • Freezer. You can also freeze these healthy baked apple slices. Arrange no sugar baked apples on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and pre-freeze them for 2 hours. Add the pre-frozen baked apple chunks to a freezer-safe bag. (I like these reusable ones.) You can keep the apple slices frozen for up to 3 months.
