Healthy Puppy Chow Recipe (Paleo)

This Paleo Puppy Chow is a sweet snack mix made by coating paleo-friendly cereal with a melted mixture of almond butter, dark chocolate chips, and coconut oil, then dusted with powdered maple sugar and tapioca flour. The process yields small crispy cereal pieces with a smooth chocolate and nut butter coating, finished with a subtly sweet, powdery exterior. It’s a grain-free treat suitable for those following a paleo diet.

Description

The recipe begins by melting together dark chocolate chips, almond butter, and coconut oil to produce a creamy mixture that evenly coats the cereal pieces. The cereal used is paleo-style, avoiding conventional grains. After mixing the cereal with the chocolate coating, it is chilled briefly to set. Meanwhile, maple sugar is blended with tapioca flour to create a fine powder which is then tossed with the coated cereal, adding a lightly sweet and slightly thickened dusting on top.

This final product is crisp, sweet, and nutty with a smooth cocoa flavor. The chilling steps ensure the coating firms properly, making the snack easy to handle and eat. It can be served as a casual sweet snack or dessert component.

The notes caution against serving this to dogs despite the name referencing “puppy chow.” It also suggests using organic powdered sugar if a whiter coating is preferred. The use of almond butter can be substituted with cashew butter according to preference.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 cups cereal Paleo style
  • 3/4 cup almond butter or cashew butter
  • 3/4 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 3/4 cup maple sugar
  • 1 tsp tapioca flour or arrowroot starch

Instructions

  1. First, add chocolate chips, almond butter and coconut oil to a microwave safe bowl.
  2. Microwave in 30 second increments until melted, stopping to stir between each increment.
  3. Add Paleo cereal to a large mixing bowl. Pour melted chocolate mixture over cereal.
  4. Gently toss until cereal is completely covered with chocolate. Place in fridge while you make the powdered maple sugar.
  5. To make powdered maple sugar, add maple sugar and tapioca flour to a blender. Blend for 1 minute or until powdered.
  6. Then, remove bowl from fridge. Add powdered maple sugar to the bowl. Toss cereal until fully coated. Place back in fridge for 10 minutes to set.
  7. Finally, serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use your preferred paleo-style cereal; Lovebird Cereal is recommended.
  • When melting the chocolate mixture, heat in short intervals and stir well to prevent burning.
  • Toss the cereal gently when mixing coatings to avoid breaking or crushing the pieces.
  • Powdered maple sugar may have a slight off-white color; organic powder sugar can substitute if a whiter appearance is desired.
  • Despite the name, do not feed this snack to dogs as it contains ingredients unsafe for pets.
