Hibiscus Margarita Recipe

This Hibiscus Margarita blends white tequila with fresh lime juice and a distinctive hibiscus simple syrup made by steeping dried hibiscus flowers in a honey-sweetened infusion. The rim is salted, preferably with hibiscus sea salt, adding a floral, tangy accent. The drink balances tart, sweet, and floral notes, providing a refreshing and colorful cocktail option.

Description

The Hibiscus Margarita features a homemade hibiscus simple syrup prepared by boiling water and honey (or sugar), then steeping dried hibiscus flowers until cooled. Straining the syrup removes the petals, leaving a vibrant, fragrant sweetener.

This syrup combines with white tequila and fresh lime juice, shaken with ice, to create a margarita with a unique floral twist. The glass rim is moistened and dipped in hibiscus sea salt for an added layer of flavor and texture. A dried hibiscus flower can garnish the drink for visual appeal.

Ideal for cocktail gatherings, this margarita offers a balance of tart citrus, sweet floral notes, and tequila warmth. The syrup can be made in advance and stored refrigerated for up to a month, allowing quick cocktail preparation.

Adjust sweetness by adding more syrup to taste. Serve chilled over ice for a refreshing experience.

  1. Begin by making the hibiscus syrup. Bring the water and honey (or sugar) to a boil over high heat. Remove the pot from the heat, add the hibiscus flowers, and stir well. Let it steep until it's cool - at least 30 minutes. Strain the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve before using it.
  2. Wet the rim of a glass with a cut piece of lime and then dip it into rim salt. Fill the glass with ice.
  3. Add a handful of ice to a cocktail shaker or glass jar then add the tequila, lime juice, and hibiscus simple syrup.
  4. Stir until it's cold and then pour it into your glass. Garnish with a dried hibiscus flower, if you'd like.

Notes

  • The hibiscus simple syrup yields enough for about 10 cocktails and can be refrigerated up to one month.
  • Add extra syrup to increase the margarita's sweetness if desired.
