Holiday Butter Cookies

Holiday Butter Cookies are made with butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, salt, flour, and cornstarch resulting in a tender and slightly crumbly cookie. The dough is chilled before baking to ease shaping small balls of dough baked until just set. These cookies have a delicate texture and a subtle buttery vanilla flavor.

Description

The Holiday Butter Cookies recipe combines a creamed mixture of butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla with a blend of flour, cornstarch, and salt to form a soft dough. Chilling the dough before baking firms it up for easier handling. The shaped dough balls bake into cookies with a tender crumb, soft centers, and minimal spreading or browning.

The texture is soft and slightly crumbly due to the cornstarch, which lightens the flour's effect. The flavor is mild with rich buttery notes complemented by vanilla and a subtle sweetness.

These cookies can be enjoyed plain or dusted with powdered sugar after cooling. They do not require frosting or cutting into shapes, as shaping small balls yields pleasing results.

Using room temperature butter and not overmixing the dough preserves tenderness and fluffiness. Avoid using margarine; unsalted real butter gives the best flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup butter
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • 2 ½ teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornstarch

Toppings

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Using the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter, sugar, and powdered sugar at medium speed for about 3 or 4 minutes. Then add the vanilla and integrate it well.
  2. Use another bowl to combine salt, flour, and cornstarch and combine the ingredients well. Add these dry ingredients to the creamed mixture and combine at medium speed until the dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, transfer to a heavily floured workspace and knead until soft.
  3. Now cover it with plastic paper and chill it in the fridge for at least 1 hour. You need to chill for at least an hour, but you can chill overnight or even leave it there until the next day. This will make it easier to shape it!
  4. Now, preheat the oven to 370°F for about 10 minutes. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper if necessary.
  5. Scoop 1 tablespoon of dough and shape it into a small ball. Then place the balls over the baking sheet and bake for 12 minutes. You'll notice that the cookies might feel slightly undone, but don't overcook them!
  6. Remove from the oven and let them cool a bit. When they are still a little warm, roll the cookies in powdered sugar. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use real, unsalted butter at room temperature for best mixing and flavor outcomes.
  • Mix ingredients until just combined to avoid activating gluten and toughening cookies; a slightly crumbly dough is normal.
  • Do not use cookie cutters on this dough as it becomes sticky; shape small balls instead.
  • Chill the dough at least one hour before baking for easier shaping and better texture; longer chilling is acceptable.
  • Allow cookies to cool completely before adding any dips or frostings.
