Homemade Apple Crisp

This homemade apple crisp combines tart apple slices tossed in sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, almond extract, and flour, topped with a crumbly oat and brown sugar mixture enriched with butter. Baking softens the apples and crisps the topping, creating a textured dessert ready to serve with whipped cream or ice cream and caramel.

Description

Homemade Apple Crisp uses a filling of peeled, cored, and thinly sliced tart apples (Granny Smith preferred) mixed with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, almond extract, and a bit of water to prevent dryness. The topping combines oats, brown sugar, flour, baking soda and powder, and softened butter blended to a crumbly texture that crisps in the oven.

The assembled crisp is baked at 350°F for 40 to 45 minutes until the apples are tender and bubbling, and the topping is golden brown and crunchy. The contrast between the soft, spiced apple filling and the crumbly oat topping offers a satisfying combination of sweet and spicy flavors with texture.

This dessert is traditionally served warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce, enhancing the sweet and nutty notes. It’s a cozy dessert for cooler seasons or any time apples are in season.

Careful peeling, coring, and slicing of the apples prevent browning and help uniform cooking. Sprinkling lemon juice over sliced apples delays oxidation during preparation. Using tart apples brings balance to the sugar in the topping and filling.
