Homemade Breadcrumbs
Description
This Homemade Breadcrumbs recipe starts by slicing bread into roughly one-inch cubes, which are then ground in a food processor to the desired crumb size. The crumbs are spread in a single layer on baking sheets and dried at 300°F in the oven with an intermediate tossing to ensure even crisping. After baking, the crumbs can be pulsed again to produce finer breadcrumbs if desired.
For added flavor, an Italian seasoning blend made from kosher salt, garlic and onion powders, Italian seasoning, and oregano may be mixed into the dried crumbs. The seasoning ratio is about 1.5 teaspoons per cup of breadcrumbs.
Once cooled, the breadcrumbs can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a month, or frozen for up to three months. Alternative methods to produce crumbs without a food processor are described, including crushing dried bread cubes in a bag with a rolling pin or grating frozen bread.
