Homemade Cheese Danish Recipe

This Homemade Cheese Danish features a flaky puff pastry base topped with a creamy filling made from cream cheese, sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla. The pastry squares are folded carefully around the filling to maintain a delicate center, and an egg wash lends a golden finish. Baking at a high temperature ensures the pastry puffs beautifully while developing a light golden crust.

Description

The Homemade Cheese Danish Recipe combines soft cream cheese filling with a crisp puff pastry shell. The filling balances cream cheese with granulated sugar, lemon juice for brightness, and vanilla for aromatic depth. The dough is rolled out and cut into squares, then folded at the corners so the filling remains visible and slightly exposed. Brushed with an egg wash, the danishes bake in a hot oven until puffed and lightly browned, presenting a tender, flaky texture with a creamy center.

Once baked, these danishes make a refined breakfast treat or a sweet snack, pairing well with coffee or tea. Handling careful folding preserves the signature shape and texture, while the lemon juice in the filling adds a subtle tang against the richness of the cheese.

The recipe includes options for using homemade or store-bought puff pastry. Store-bought pastry may puff more, so gently pressing the folds post-baking helps maintain the shape. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days to keep the pastry fresh.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 batch puff pastry see note to use store-bought pastry, homemade

Filling

  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ¾ teaspoons vanilla extract

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons water

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3-5 teaspoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400F (205C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.
  2. Prepare filling by stirring together cream cheese, sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
  3. Divide puff pastry into 2 even parts (If using homemade puff pastry I’ll usually cut this width-wise, if using store-bought dough it will already be divided into two even sheets for you).
  4. Roll first half of puff pastry into a 12x12” square (about 1/16” thick). Cut into 4 even-sized squares.
  5. Transfer squares onto prepared baking sheet. Dollop about two tablespoons of filling into the center of each square. Fold the corners over the center of the filling, leaving a space about ¼” thick in the center and between corners.
  6. Prepare egg wash by whisking together egg and 2 teaspoons water. Brush generously over the top of the puff pastry dough.
  7. Transfer cheese danishes to 400F (205C) preheated oven and bake for 17-19 minutes or until light golden brown. Pastries will puff a lot in the oven but will settle as they cool.
  8. Repeat steps with second half of puff pastry dough.
  9. Allow cheese danishes to cool before drizzling with glaze.

Glaze

  1. To prepare glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract.
  2. Drizzle glaze generously over cooled cheese danishes. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use one 1.1 lb box of store-bought puff pastry, thawed, and roll to a 12x12-inch square if needed.
  • Store baked danishes in an airtight container refrigerated for up to 2 days.
  • With store-bought pastry, gently press down the folded corners after baking to prevent over-puffing.
