Homemade Chocolate Pudding

Homemade Chocolate Pudding uses cocoa powder, sugar, cornstarch, and milk to create a rich, creamy dessert. The pudding is cooked on the stove until thickened, then finished with butter and vanilla for smoothness. It can be served warm or chilled, and a plastic wrap on the surface prevents skin formation while cooling. This pudding has a classic chocolate flavor and a custard-like texture, making it suitable for a comforting dessert.

Description

Homemade Chocolate Pudding blends sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and milk cooked gradually to a silky thickness. The sugar and cocoa deliver sweet and chocolatey notes, while cornstarch acts as the thickening agent. Once the mixture thickens and boils, it is taken off the heat and enriched with butter and vanilla, which add creaminess and depth without overpowering the chocolate.

The pudding is stirred as it cools to prevent a skin from forming, retaining a smooth consistency. This approach provides a versatile dessert that can be enjoyed warm for a comforting effect or chilled for a refreshing finish.

Serve on its own or topped with whipped cream or fresh fruit for added contrast. Its texture is smooth and creamy, with a rich chocolate taste that holds well whether freshly prepared or refrigerated.

To avoid a watery texture, the pudding should be removed from heat immediately as it starts boiling and thickening since extended boiling breaks down the starch. Applying plastic wrap directly on the surface while cooling prevents a skin from forming and maintains the proper texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • cup cocoa powder unsweetened
  • cup cornstarch
  • pinch salt
  • 4 ½ cups milk
  • 3 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and cornstarch. Mix well. Add in cold milk, whisk until combined.
  2. Increase heat to medium, stirring constantly until mixture reaches a boil*.
  3. As soon as the pudding has thickened, remove from the heat and stir in butter and vanilla.
  4. Allow mixture to cool completely, stirring occasionally to avoid a skin forming on the pudding.
  5. Serve chilled or warm.

Notes

  • Place plastic wrap directly on the pudding surface during cooling to prevent skin formation.
  • Remove from heat as soon as the pudding begins to boil and thicken to avoid thinning the texture.
