Homemade Cranberry Sauce
Description
This Homemade Cranberry Sauce combines equal parts granulated and light brown sugar with fresh cranberries, water, and orange juice in a saucepan over medium heat. Cooking and frequent stirring cause the cranberries to burst, releasing their juices and forming a natural gel as the mixture thickens. Pumpkin pie spice adds warm, aromatic notes to complement the tart berries.
After cooking for about ten minutes, the sauce is removed from heat and optionally stirred with Grand Marnier, which adds a subtle orange-flavored depth. The sauce thickens further as it cools, developing a jelly-like consistency suitable for serving alongside roasted meats, holiday dinners, or as a spread.
Ingredients
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- ⅓ cup water
- ⅓ cup orange juice
- 12 ounces cranberries fresh
- ¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1-2 tablespoons Grand Marnier optional
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine all of the ingredients except for the Grand Marnier. Cook, stirring frequently, until the cranberries start to pop (about 10 minutes).
- Remove from heat, stir in Grand Marnier and place sauce in a bowl. Cranberry sauce will thicken as it cools.
