Homemade Dog Treats Recipe
Description
Homemade Dog Treats Recipe uses a straightforward combination of rolled oats, kosher salt, an egg, and unsalted beef or chicken broth to create a dough. The dough is kneaded and firmed to about half an inch thickness before being cut into shapes and baked at 325 degrees for 20 minutes. This method creates firm, oat-based treats suitable for dogs. The mixture relies largely on oats for texture and an egg as a binder, with broth providing mild savory notes.
The resulting treats have a sturdy crumb from the oats and hold their shape well after baking and cooling. The recipe is designed for home cooks to prepare a safe, controlled ingredient snack option for dogs without artificial additives.
Once cooled, the treats can be stored in an airtight container or frozen in a zip-top bag for later thawing and use. This makes them a practical treat option to prepare in advance and portion out as needed.
Ingredients
- 2.5 cups rolled oats divided
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup beef broth unsalted, low-fat or unsalted, low-fat chicken broth
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
- Add 2 cups oats, salt, beef broth, and egg to a large mixing bowl. Combine well. Add remaining 1/2 cup of rolled oat and combine.
- Pour onto wax paper and knead dough for about 3 minutes. Let stand for about 3 minutes to begin to become firmer. Press to 1/2-inch thickness.
- Cut with cutter and place onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
- Store in an airtight container for use or store in a ziptop bag in the freezer for later thawing and use.
Notes
- Use unsalted, low-fat broth to avoid excess sodium in treats.
- Press dough to uniform thickness for even baking and crispness.
- Store baked treats in airtight containers or freeze for longer storage.
