Homemade Elderberry Cough Syrup
Description
This syrup begins by boiling freeze-dried elderberries with cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, and optionally cloves and fresh ginger. The mixture is boiled and stirred for 30 minutes to extract the berries' properties and develop the infusion. After removing solid ingredients and pressing for juice, raw honey and fresh lemon juice are whisked in to add sweetness and acidity.
The syrup has a rich texture and deep flavor from elderberries and warming spices. The raw honey's beneficial properties are preserved by adding it to the warm (not hot) liquid. It is stored refrigerated in an airtight jar and consumed in small doses at onset of cold symptoms for potential soothing effects.
Approximately 1 cup of syrup is produced, yielding about 16 servings depending on dosage. Its thick consistency and spice combination may make it helpful to take gradually through the day for throat relief.
Ingredients
- 1.5 cups elderberries freeze-dried
- 3 cups water filtered
- 3 cinnamon stick or 6 if they're short
- 1 teaspoons nutmeg
- ½ cup honey raw
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice fresh
- ½ tablespoons cloves optional
- 1 tablespoons ginger optional, fresh
Instructions
- In a large piece of cookware, combine everything except the lemon juice and honey.
- Heat until boiling and then reduce heat and keep it at a rolling boil for 30 minutes, stirring often.
- Once boiling is done, pick out the cinnamon sticks and strain out the elderberries from the liquid. Make sure to press into the mesh sieve to get all the good juice!
- Whisk in the honey and lemon juice.
- Pour into a jar and keep in the fridge until needed.
Notes
- Ensure elderberries are boiled thoroughly, as raw elderberries are unsafe to consume.
- Add honey while the syrup is warm, not hot, to preserve honey's beneficial qualities.
- Store syrup refrigerated in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
- Take 1-5 tablespoons daily at early signs of a scratchy throat for potential relief.
- This recipe yields about 1 cup (16 servings) of syrup.
