Homemade Gumdrops

Homemade Gumdrops are chewy, colorful candies made by cooking sugar, applesauce, gelatin, and flavored gelatin mixes. The mixture is boiled, poured into pans, cooled, refrigerated, cut into shapes, dried, and coated with sugar. These chewy sweets have a firm but tender texture and a sweet fruit flavor from the jellies and applesauce.

Description

This recipe produces Homemade Gumdrops by combining sugar, applesauce, unflavored gelatin, and flavored gelatin powders (strawberry and lime) in two batches. Each batch is heated to a boil, then poured into greased pans to set. After refrigeration for 3 hours, the firm gel is cut into squares or shaped with small cookie cutters.

The gumdrops are then allowed to dry at room temperature for at least 8 hours to develop their chewy texture. Finally, each piece is coated in sugar to prevent sticking. This process produces tender, fruity candies that are enjoyable as treats or gifts.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 5 cups sugar divided
  • 2 2/3 cups applesauce divided
  • 2 ounce strawberry jello
  • 2 ounce lime gelatin mix
  • 4 envelopes gelatin divided, unflavored

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, stir together 2 cups sugar, 1 ⅓ cups applesauce, 2 packages of strawberry jello and 2 packages unflavored gelatin.
  2. Let this mixture stand for 1 minute.
  3. Next over medium heat bring the mixture to a boil stirring constantly.
  4. Boil the mixture for one minute.
  5. Immediately pour the mixture into a greased 11x7 or 9x13 pan.
  6. Repeat these streps with another 2 cups of sugar, 1 ⅓ cups apple sauce, 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin and lime jello.
  7. Place both pans into the fridge for 3 hours.
  8. I find it is easier to cut the mixture into squares and use a metal spatula to pull the squares out and transfer onto a wax or parchment paper. This will be a sticky job but they will come out of the pan.
  9. Using some mini christmas cookie cutters cut out your shapes and place onto a parchment or wax paper lined tray.
  10. Let the candies dry at room temperature 8 hours or overnight.
  11. After a minimum of 8 hours dry time take the remaining 1 cup of sugar and dip each gumdrop candy in, coating it all around with sugar.
  12. Serve!
