Homemade Gummy Bears (Only 3 Ingredients!)

Report
These Homemade Gummy Bears use just three main ingredients—flavored Jello, unflavored gelatin, and water—and optional cornstarch to create chewy, colorful candy bears. The mixture is gently heated to dissolve the powders, poured into molds, chilled, and lightly dusted with cornstarch to prevent sticking. The recipe yields a large batch suitable for customization with different flavors and colors by using separate Jello boxes.

Description

This recipe makes gummy bears by combining flavored Jello powder, unflavored gelatin, and water in a small saucepan. After letting the powders hydrate, the mixture is gently heated while whisking until fully dissolved. The liquid is then piped into bear-shaped molds that have been dusted with cornstarch to ease removal. Once cooled to set in the refrigerator, the gummies are popped out and dusted again with cornstarch to keep them from sticking together during storage.

The gummies have a soft-chewy texture typical of gelatin candies and carry the distinct flavor of the chosen Jello. Using unflavored gelatin along with the flavored powder ensures a good set without excessive sweetness. Cornstarch particularly helps with stickiness and makes handling easier. Multiple batches with different Jello flavors can create a rainbow assortment.

The recipe provides a cost-effective way to make homemade gummy candies with control over ingredients. The gummies can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for several weeks, though they may become sticky when left at room temperature for long periods. Adjusting flavors or using sugar-free Jello offers variations for dietary preferences.

The method requires moderate attention to temperature while dissolving and careful handling to maintain shape, but results in a fun, customizable candy treat.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 Box jello A typical box is 3oz, flavored
  • 2 Packets gelatin unflavored
  • 1/3 Cup water
  • 1/4 Cup cornstarch optional (helps prevent sticking)

Instructions

  1. Dust the gummy bear molds with a light coat of cornstarch. Set aside.
  2. Combine one package of Jello, 2 packets of unflavored gelatin, and 1/3 cup water in a small saucepan. Mix together and let sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Place the pan over low to medium heat and whisk continuously until the powder is dissolved. This will take about another 5 minutes.
  4. Once dissolved use a dropper to place fill the prepared gummy bear molds with the gelatin mixture.
  5. Allow gummies to sit for 5-10 minutes to cool. Lightly coat the backs of the gummy bears with cornstarch, then place the molds in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to fully cool and set.
  6. In a shallow bowl, add 1 tbsp cornstarch. Pop the fully-set gummy bears out of the molds and into the bowl. Lightly toss to coat the gummies evenly. The cornstarch will prevent the gummies from sticking together. You can also do this step in a large ziplock bag.
  7. Store gummies in an airtight container.

Notes

  • You can make sugar-free gummies by using sugar-free Jello and coating with cornstarch instead of powdered sugar to reduce carbs.
  • Yield varies by mold size; one box of Jello makes about 100 gummies using similar sized molds.
  • Making different flavors requires preparing separate batches with different Jello flavors for each.
  • Jello is gluten-free, but check product labels if cross-contamination is a concern.
  • Store gummies in an airtight container refrigerated to keep fresh up to 2-3 weeks or possibly longer.
  • Gummies stored at room temperature tend to get sticky and soft after a few days.
