Homemade Hamburger Buns

Homemade Hamburger Buns use milk, active dry yeast, and avocado oil to create soft, slightly rich buns with a tender crumb. The dough is kneaded until smooth, allowed to rise until doubled, then shaped into round balls and baked with an optional sesame seed topping. These buns provide a sturdy yet soft base for hamburgers or sandwiches and can also be made in smaller portions for slider buns.

Description

This recipe for Homemade Hamburger Buns starts with activating yeast in warmed milk sweetened with granulated sugar to encourage fermentation. The yeast mixture is combined with all-purpose flour, salt, an egg, and avocado oil to produce a smooth, shiny dough through kneading. After resting in a warm place to double in size, the dough is portioned into equal balls, shaped into rounds, and placed with space between them on a baking sheet.

Prior to baking at 350°F (177°C), the buns are brushed with milk and optionally sprinkled with black or white sesame seeds for added texture and flavor. Baking time of 15-17 minutes results in golden buns with a soft and slightly enriched crumb. The option to divide the dough into 12 pieces instead of 10 allows for smaller buns suitable for sliders or lighter sandwiches.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 250 ml milk whole
  • 15 g granulated sugar
  • 8 g active dry yeast
  • 500 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg large
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 60 ml avocado oil

For the topping:

  • 1 tablespoon milk whole
  • 1 tablespoon black sesame seeds optional, or white sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, add the warmed milk, granulated sugar and yeast. Give it a stir and let the yeast activate.
  2. To a stand mixer bowl fitted with a dough hook attachment, add the flour, egg, salt, and oil. Add the activated yeast mixture and knead until the dough becomes smooth and shiny, about 5-8 minutes.
  3. Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl and cover with a tea towel.
  4. Let the dough rise in a warm location until doubled in size, about 1-1.5 hours, depending on how warm it is.
  5. Once risen, deflate the dough and divide into 10 equal balls.
  6. Shape into a round ball with your hand and place each dough ball on a parchment-lined baking sheet, allowing a few inches in between.
  7. Press the dough down firmly to flatten and cover with a tea towel.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F/177°C.
  9. Once the dough balls have risen and are slightly puffy, lightly brush the tops with milk.
  10. Add toppings such as sesame seeds (if you wish).
  11. Bake at 350°F/177°C for 15-17 minutes, until lightly golden.
  12. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack.
  13. Let the buns cool before slicing in half.

Notes

  • Divide the dough into 12 portions instead of 10 to yield smaller hamburger buns suitable for sliders or snacks.
