Homemade Hamburger Helper

Homemade Hamburger Helper combines browned ground beef and onions with elbow macaroni simmered in a seasoned broth mixture, finished by stirring in evaporated milk and cheddar cheese for a creamy, cheesy pasta dish. The ground beef is cooked with garlic and paired with ketchup and mustard to create a subtly tangy sauce that coats the tender macaroni. This casserole-style skillet recipe is hearty and comforting, requiring just one pan and standard pantry ingredients for a filling meal.

Description

Homemade Hamburger Helper centers on ground beef sautéed with diced onion and garlic until browned and fragrant. Cooking in the same pot, ketchup and yellow mustard add a touch of tang, blending with the coarse salt and black pepper to season the meat evenly. Uncooked elbow macaroni is then combined with chicken broth, allowing it to simmer covered until tender and infused with the savory beef flavors.

Once the pasta is cooked, stirring in evaporated milk and shredded cheddar cheese creates a creamy, cheesy finish that binds the ingredients together with smooth richness. The mixture is gently heated until the cheese melts into the sauce, resulting in a cohesive, comforting dish with a tender yet slightly firm pasta texture and savory beef undertones.

This dish is versatile as a simple weeknight dinner that can be served on its own or alongside green vegetables or a light salad. It’s filling enough to satisfy but uncomplicated in flavor, making it approachable for cooks seeking comfort food with easily accessible ingredients and straightforward preparation.
