Homemade Marinara Sauce

Homemade Marinara Sauce features a blend of sautéed onions, garlic, canned crushed and whole tomatoes, and a mix of Italian herbs simmered to develop a balanced tomato sauce. The sauce is seasoned with sugar, salt, and pepper, then garnished with fresh basil. It offers a bright, slightly sweet tomato flavor with herbal undertones, suitable for pasta or as a base for other dishes.

Description

This marinara sauce begins with cooking diced onion in olive oil until softened and golden, developing sweetness and depth. Minced garlic is then cooked briefly to release aroma without burning. The sauce incorporates both crushed and whole canned tomatoes, tomato paste for richness and thickness, and a carefully measured combination of dried oregano, basil, parsley, and Italian herbs to create a layered Italian flavor profile. Sugar is added to balance natural tomato acidity.

The mixture is brought to a light boil then reduced to a simmer, partially covered, and cooked for 30 minutes, allowing flavors to meld and sauce to thicken. Fresh chopped basil stirred in near the end adds brightness and freshness. The final sauce is seasoned to taste with salt and pepper. It can be served immediately over pasta or cooled and refrigerated for up to one week in airtight containers.
