Homemade Powdered Sugar

Homemade Powdered Sugar is created by grinding granulated sugar into a fine powder, with optional cornstarch added to prevent clumping. This simple process yields fresh powdered sugar suitable for baking and decorating needs without requiring a commercial purchase.

Description

This Homemade Powdered Sugar recipe involves placing granulated sugar into a food processor, spice grinder, or similar appliance and grinding it until it reaches a fine, powdery consistency. The process may take a few minutes and occasional shaking helps break up clumps.

Once ground, the sugar should be allowed to settle briefly to avoid spills when opening the container. Cornstarch can be blended in with a few pulses to help absorb moisture and prevent clumping during storage.

Stored in an airtight container and kept in a cool, dry place, the homemade powdered sugar can last up to a year, making it a handy staple for various baking recipes requiring smooth, fine sugar.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch , optional

Instructions

  1. Place the sugar in a small food processor, (clean) coffee grinder or spice grinder.
  2. Grind until it forms a fine powder. Depending on the motor and blade of your appliance, this could take 1-5 minutes. If it does take longer, give it breaks to not burn out the motor. You might need to shake it a little to break up clumps.
  3. Allow it to sit for 1-2 minutes before opening to prevent a powdered sugar bomb from going off.
  4. If using, add the cornstarch by blending in with a few pulses or sifting together.
  5. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 1 year.
  6. If you've tried this recipe, come back and let us know how it was in the comments or ratings.
