Homemade Shake and Bake Pork Chops
Description
This recipe combines bread crumbs with a blend of seasonings such as salt, paprika, celery salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried herbs including basil, parsley, and oregano. Adding vegetable oil to this mixture helps the coating adhere and develop a crisp exterior when baked at 425°F. Pork cutlets are shaken in the mixture to evenly coat them before being placed spaced on a greased baking sheet.
Baking for 8-12 minutes on the lower oven rack, the pork cooks quickly due to its thinness and achieves an internal temperature of 165°F for safe consumption. The resulting chops have a flavorful herb crust and tender interior without frying.
This seasoned coating can be adapted for chicken cuts using similar baking times adjusted by cut size. The recipe is convenient for meal prep, storing, and reheating, maintaining the coating's texture well if frozen and properly thawed before warming.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs pork chop cut into thin cutlets, boneless, thinly cut
For the Homemade Shake and Bake mix
- 1 cup bread crumbs plain, dried
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon celery salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper ground
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon basil dried leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon parsley dried
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano dried
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425˚F.
- Combine all ingredients for the shake and bake mix except the oil in a gallon size zip top bag, or large container. Mix well. Add the oil and work the mixture until it is evenly distributed throughout.
- Place the raw pork chops in the bag and shake until they are all coated in the mixture.
- Grease a large baking sheet and lay the pork in a single layer leaving at least an inch between each cutlet. I like to make sure that they are coated with a generous amount of crumb mixture and pat a little extra to the top if needed.
- Bake on lower oven rack for 8-12 minutes or until the pork chops are 165˚F internal temp.
Notes
- This seasoned mix works well with various chicken cuts; adjust baking times to reach 165°F internal temperature accordingly.
- Store cooked pork chops in airtight containers in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or freeze for up to one month.
- Reheat gently in the oven at 350°F or microwave in short intervals to preserve texture.
- Freeze uncooked coated chops for meal prep; thaw 24-48 hours in the refrigerator before baking.
