Homemade Tortilla Strips
Description
To make Homemade Tortilla Strips, corn tortillas are cut into strips, typically using a pizza cutter which allows for quick slicing of multiple tortillas at once. The strips are fried in hot neutral cooking oil at 350-375°F until crisp. After frying, the strips are drained on paper towels and salted immediately to adhere to the hot surface.
The result is crunchy, golden tortilla strips that add a toasted corn flavor and crisp texture when sprinkled over dishes. They are suitable for enhancing salads, soups, or other meals needing a crunchy element.
These strips can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week before they begin to stale. Freezing is an option for longer preservation and freshness, with a storage time of about a month. Alternative cuts include triangles for tortilla chips, and one can use flour tortillas instead, though the texture will differ.
Ingredients
- 12 corn tortillas
- neutral cooking oil for frying, generic cooking oil
- kosher salt
Instructions
- Cut tortillas into strips using a pizza cutter. You can cut 2-3 at a time pretty easily.
- Heat oil in a deep dryer, large skillet or frying pan. When oil reaches 350-375 degrees F, place strips into hot oil and fry until they become crispy.
- Remove from oil with tongs or a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel. Sprinkle with salt after each batch.
Notes
- Tortilla strips keep about a week in an airtight container before becoming stale.
- They can be frozen for up to a month and pulled out to garnish salads or soups as needed.
- Cutting tortillas into fourths creates triangles suitable as tortilla chips.
- Flour tortillas can be used instead of corn, resulting in a different texture.
