Homemade Twix Bars
Description
This recipe builds layered bars starting with graham cracker crumbs cooked with brown sugar, butter, milk, and granulated sugar until boiling and thickened into a syrup. The bottom of a pan is lined with Club crackers, topped with the boiled mixture, then another cracker layer.
Next, a topping of melted butterscotch chips, chocolate chips, and creamy peanut butter is spread evenly over the crackers. Once cooled, the bars are cut into portions, yielding a candy bar with a crunchy base, chewy caramel layer, and creamy chocolate-peanut butter finish.
Club crackers can be substituted with saltine or graham crackers, though flavor may vary slightly. Butterscotch chips can be replaced with extra chocolate chips to adjust sweetness balance.
These bars store well covered in the refrigerator or can be frozen for up to three months, thawing in the fridge or at room temperature before serving.
Ingredients
- 1 cup graham cracker crumbs from 9 crackers
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 leeve Club crackers (see note 1)
- 1 cup butterscotch chips (see note 2)
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 1 cup peanut butter creamy
Instructions
- In a 3-quart saucepan over medium-high heat, bring crumbs, brown sugar, butter, milk, and sugar to a boil. Reduce heat slightly and boil 5 minutes.
- Meanwhile, line the bottom of 9-inch by 13-inch pan with Club crackers. Spread the boiled sugar mixture over top of crackers. Top with another layer of Club crackers.
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and peanut butter. Stir until smooth (do not whip). Spread evenly over crackers. Cool at least 30 minutes and cut into bars.
Notes
- Club crackers can be swapped with saltine or graham crackers, but the taste profile will change slightly.
- If you prefer, use an additional cup of chocolate chips instead of butterscotch chips for a different sweetness.
- You can expect to yield about 42 bars by cutting into 3 rows of 14 pieces each.
- Store bars covered in the refrigerator or freeze for up to 3 months; thaw in the fridge or at room temperature before serving.
