Homemade Whipped Cream Recipe

This Homemade Whipped Cream recipe uses chilled heavy cream combined with powdered sugar and optional vanilla extract to create a fluffy topping. The cream is beaten until it reaches either soft or stiff peaks depending on the desired consistency, ideal for garnishing desserts or drinks. The method emphasizes chilled tools for best results and notes storage time after whipping.

Description

For optimal whipping, both the heavy cream and the metal mixing bowl with whisk are chilled prior to use, ensuring the cream whips efficiently. The cream is combined with powdered sugar and optionally vanilla extract to add subtle flavor. Beating takes 3 to 8 minutes, depending on whether soft or stiff peaks are desired, which affects how the cream holds shapes or melts. The finished whipped cream is light and airy, suitable as a topping for a variety of desserts or beverages.

After making, the whipped cream can be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 10 hours to retain freshness and texture. Different flavor extracts can be substituted for vanilla according to preference. The recipe yields about 2 cups of whipped cream, enough for approximately eight 1/4 cup servings.

Making whipped cream just before use is recommended for the best texture, though it can be prepared a few hours ahead if needed.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup heavy cream cold (see note 1)
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract optional (see note 2)

Instructions

  1. For best results, chill metal mixing bowl and metal whisk in freezer for 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. Combine cream, sugar, and vanilla (if using) in mixing bowl and beat until soft peaks form, 3 to 4 minutes, or until stiff peaks form, about 6 to 8 minutes (the stiffness of the peaks depends on what you want for your particular application).
  3. Whipped cream can be stored covered, in the refrigerator, for 10 hours.

Notes

  • Chill heavy cream and metal mixing tools for at least 10-15 minutes before whipping to improve volume.
  • Vanilla extract is optional; almond, peppermint, or orange extracts can be used for different flavors.
  • This recipe makes about 2 cups, enough for around eight 1/4-cup servings.
  • Store leftover whipped cream covered in the refrigerator for up to 10 hours.
  • Best to prepare fresh, but can be made ahead and refrigerated briefly.
