Honey Orange Firecracker Shrimp

Honey Orange Firecracker Shrimp combines crispy fried shrimp coated in cornstarch with a bright, sticky sauce made from honey, orange zest and juice, soy sauce, garlic, and red pepper flakes. The shrimp have a crunchy texture on the outside and tender inside, while the sauce balances sweetness, citrus tang, and a touch of heat. This recipe finishes quickly by tossing the browned shrimp with the thickened sauce, making it a flavorful choice for a main or appetizer. Garnished with green onions and sesame seeds, it adds visual appeal and fresh notes.

Description

Honey Orange Firecracker Shrimp features shrimp coated in cornstarch and pan-fried until crisp and golden. The accompanying sauce is a blend of honey, fresh orange zest and juice, soy sauce, minced garlic, and crushed red pepper flakes, which gives the dish a balance of sweet, citrusy, and spicy flavors. Once the shrimp are cooked, the sauce is quickly thickened in the pan by utilizing the cornstarch coating on the shrimp, creating a glossy glaze. The shrimp are then tossed in this sauce to evenly coat them.

This recipe's texture contrasts the crunchy exterior of the shrimp with the sticky, flavorful glaze. The garnishes of sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds add freshness and a slight nuttiness. It is served right away to maintain the crispness of the shrimp.

Cooking in batches ensures even frying and a crispy crust. Avoid draining the shrimp on paper towels, which can cause steaming and loss of crispiness. The quick sauce thickening step uses the coating already on the shrimp, eliminating the need for an extra slurry, making the cooking efficient.

  6. When you've finished frying the shrimp drain the oil.
  7. Add the sauce back to the pan and add the shrimp on top.
  8. Toss to combine and cook for 15-20 seconds or until the sauce has thickened (this will not take long, all the cornstarch on the shrimp will thicken it quickly).

  • Do not drain shrimp on paper towels to prevent steaming and sogginess.
