Horchata Mexican Drink Recipe

This traditional Horchata Mexican Drink is made from blended long-grain rice and cinnamon sticks soaked overnight, then strained and mixed with milk, vanilla, and sugar. Served chilled over ice with a dusting of ground cinnamon, it offers a creamy, sweet beverage with warm cinnamon notes. The soaking process softens the rice for a smooth, delicate texture that balances richness and spice.

Description

Horchata Mexican Drink Recipe uses white long-grain rice and whole cinnamon sticks blended together with water to create a base mixture, which is then left to soak for at least eight hours or overnight. This process infuses the rice and cinnamon flavors into the water, resulting in a mild, aromatic infusion. The mixture is then carefully strained through a fine mesh to remove solids, producing a smooth and slightly milky liquid.

After straining, the drink is sweetened with granulated sugar and flavored with whole milk and vanilla extract. Served chilled over ice and garnished with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, Horchata provides a refreshing balance of creamy, sweet, and warm cinnamon flavors, making it a pleasant complement to warm dishes or as a refreshing refreshment on its own.

This recipe respects the traditional preparation method relying on soaking and straining instead of using rice flour, ensuring the characteristic subtle texture and flavor that distinguish authentic horchata.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 1/3 cups white long-grain rice uncooked
  • 2 cinnamon preferably Mexican cinnamon sticks, if available, whole sticks
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 cup milk whole
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (preferably Mexican vanilla, if available)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • ice
  • ground cinnamon for garnish

Instructions

  1. Combine the rice, cinnamon sticks, and 2 cups of the water in a blender.  Blend until the rice and cinnamon sticks are roughly ground up (1 to 2 minutes).  Add the 2 remaining cups of water and blend again.
  2. Let the rice mixture soak at room temperature at least 8 hours, or overnight.
  3. Once the rice mixture has soaked for at least 8 hours, pour through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher.  Discard the rice and cinnamon stick solids and rinse the strainer well.  Strain the mixture again one more time, just to make sure the horchata isn't gritty.
  4. Stir in the milk, vanilla, and sugar, then chill ready to serve.  Serve over plenty of ice with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon on top.
