Hot Fudge Sauce
Description
Hot Fudge Sauce is made by melting unsalted butter with semi-sweet chocolate chips, then stirring in powdered sugar and evaporated milk. The mixture is brought to a gentle boil over medium heat and cooked for several minutes until it thickens slightly. As it cools, it becomes even thicker and takes on a luscious, velvety consistency. This sauce’s sweetness is rounded out by the richness of butter and chocolate, creating a classic dessert accompaniment.
The sauce’s texture is smooth and pourable when warm, which makes it ideal for drizzling over ice cream or other desserts. The semi-sweet chocolate chips provide a balanced chocolate flavor that avoids excessive bitterness or cloying sweetness.
For convenience, the recipe includes notes on making larger batches and enhancing chocolate intensity by doubling the chocolate chips. Storing in the refrigerator allows keeping the sauce for up to three weeks, and gentle reheating restores its pourable quality without separation.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter unsalted
- ¼ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips Guittard is my favorite
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- ⅔ cup evaporated milk One 12-ounce can will make a double batch of hot fudge. Just double the other 3 ingredients as well.
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, stir together butter and chocolate, until chocolate is melted.
- Stir in powdered sugar and evaporated milk. Mixture will be very thin. Increase heat to slightly more than medium and bring mixture to a low boil. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring continuously, until thickened.
- Remove saucepan from heat and let cool for 5 to 10 minutes. It will thicken more, the longer it cools.
Notes
- The recipe yields about 1 cup of hot fudge sauce; scale ingredient quantities accordingly for larger batches.
- To increase chocolate flavor, use twice the amount of chocolate chips while keeping other ingredients unchanged.
- Store leftover sauce covered in the refrigerator for up to three weeks to maintain freshness.
- Reheat gently on the stove or microwave to restore a smooth pouring consistency without breaking the sauce.
