How to Cook Couscous
Description
To cook couscous, first bring broth or water to a boil with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and kosher salt. Separately, toasting the couscous in olive oil until golden brown adds depth to its mild flavor. The toasted couscous is then stirred quickly into the boiling liquid and covered to steam off heat for about 10 minutes until fully rehydrated and tender. The couscous is fluffed with a fork to separate grains and prevent clumping.
For enhanced taste, fresh chopped herbs like parsley and dill, sautéed garlic, chopped green onions, and spices such as cumin can be mixed in after cooking. This couscous makes a light, fragrant accompaniment to roasted meats or vegetables.
Using broth instead of water enriches the flavor, and toasting in olive oil imparts a subtle nuttiness. Adjust spices and herbs to suit personal preference.
