How to Cook Rice

How to Cook Rice outlines a straightforward technique for cooking long-grain white rice using simple ingredients: rice, water, and salt. The process involves rinsing the rice, simmering it gently with a covered pot, and letting it rest off the heat to achieve fluffy, separate grains. The method ensures consistent texture and prevents sticking or burning, suitable for everyday meals.

Description

This rice cooking method begins with rinsing the rice under cold water to remove excess starch, improving texture and reduce clumping. Combine rinsed rice with measured water and salt in a saucepan. Bring it to a full boil over high heat, then reduce to low heat to maintain a gentle simmer while covered tightly.

The rice simmers undisturbed for 15 minutes, which allows absorption and steam cooking without stirring or lifting the lid, preserving steam. After simmering, the pot is removed from heat and allowed to rest covered for five minutes; this resting phase lets the grains firm up and separate.

Fluff with a fork before serving to separate grains. This method produces tender, well-cooked rice suited as a base for various dishes.

A note for cooking long grain brown rice is included: use more water (2 cups) and a longer simmering time (45 minutes), applying the same resting step for best results.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup long grain white rice
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice using a fine wire mesh strainer.
  2. Add the rice, salt, and water to a saucepot.
  3. Place a lid on the pot, turn the heat on to high, and bring the water up to a full boil.
  4. Once the water reaches a full boil, turn the heat down to low and let the rice continue to simmer for 15 minutes. Do not lift the lid or stir as it simmers. Make sure it maintains a gentle simmer the entire time.
  5. After simmering for 15 minutes, turn off the heat and let the rice rest without lifting the lid or stirring, for an additional five minutes.
  6. After letting the rice rest, lift the lid and fluff with a fork. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Rinsing rice removes excess starch and improves grain separation.
  • Maintain a gentle simmer without lifting the lid to ensure even cooking.
  • Resting the rice off heat allows moisture redistribution for fluffier grains.
  • For brown rice, increase water to 2 cups and simmer for 45 minutes, then rest as with white rice.
