How to Cook Steak on the Stove

This method for cooking sirloin steak uses a cast iron skillet to sear the meat, developing a browned crust, then finishes it in the oven for even cooking. Butter is added during searing and before oven roasting to enrich flavor and aid browning. Resting the steak before slicing ensures juiciness.

Description

How to Cook Steak on the Stove outlines a straightforward approach to preparing sirloin steaks in an oven-safe skillet. After seasoning the steaks with salt and pepper, the recipe starts by searing them over medium-high heat with butter to develop a crispy, flavorful crust on the exterior. Applying pressure with a spatula encourages even browning particularly on the skin side.

Following the sear, steaks are flipped, topped with additional butter for richness, and moved to a preheated oven at 350°F to finish cooking gently. This dual-method approach results in steaks with a tender interior and a caramelized outer crust. A brief resting period under foil after cooking reabsorbs juices and ensures the meat remains moist.

Serving sliced against the grain aids tenderness and provides a neat presentation. The recipe suggests accompaniments like vegetables or potatoes, making it adaptable to various meal types and side dishes.

The notes specify the serving size at half a pound per steak, helpful for portion planning.

  3. Flip your steaks over, top each steak with 1/2 tablespoon of butter and transfer to the hot oven for 5 minutes, keeping them in the same skillet.
  4. After the 5 minutes, take them out of the oven and transfer steaks to a plate. Cover with foil and rest for 5 more minutes.
  5. Finally, take the foil off and thinly slice the steak against the grain. Serve with vegetables, potatoes or any other side you like to have with your steak.
