How to Make a Barbie Cake

How to Make a Barbie Cake involves baking two layers of cake in different sized bowls shaped to fit a Barbie doll as the centerpiece, creating a doll skirt effect. The method uses standard cake mix and buttercream frosting with shaped layers to assemble a standing doll cake with a decorative skirt. The layered structure creates a visually striking dessert perfect for celebratory events or children’s parties. Adjustments with extra batter allow for additional cupcakes or layers to increase height and decoration options.

Description

The How to Make a Barbie Cake recipe begins with preparing cake batter from two cake mixes, which are divided between two greased and floured bowls of different sizes shaped to fit the Barbie doll. These bowl layers form the doll's dress base once baked and stacked. The smaller bowl bakes faster and should be removed earlier, while the larger bowl requires more baking time until set. The assembled cake is then frosted with buttercream frosting, transforming the cake layers into a doll skirt. You may use leftover batter to bake cupcakes for extra decoration or an additional layer if desired.

The recipe relies on precise bowl sizing to ensure the Barbie doll fits correctly, with a preference for a skirt that is slightly taller rather than too short. Baking requires monitoring the cake’s doneness since the layers vary in size and baking times. Using frosting or fondant allows for decoration and shaping the skirt to create the desired effect.

This Barbie Cake is a decorative dessert often prepared for children’s birthdays or themed parties. It serves as both a confection and a centerpiece. Presentation involves placing the doll into the cake skirt-shaped layers, making a visually appealing, sculptural cake. Adding cupcakes around the cake is an optional way to complement the main cake and add servings.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cake mix made according to package directions
  • 1 Barbie or Barbie-sized Princess Doll
  • 1 recipe buttercream frosting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, make up cake batter. I almost always need 2 cake mixes for this and almost always have leftovers for a few cupcakes (which no one complains about ever). Grease and flour a medium-sized and small glass oven-safe bowl (see notes above). Measure to make sure your Barbie will fit when both layers are stacked. It's better for the skirt part to be too tall than too short.Spray bowls with cooking spray (or grease with butter) and dust lightly with flour. Turn upside-down and tap the bowls to get rid of excess flour.
  2. Fill with batter until they are a little over 3/4 full. Use remaining batter for cup cakes. You can also fill an 8" round pan with the remaining batter if you want to add some height to the base of the Barbie cake, making it 3 layers instead of 2. Bake at 350 for about an hour or until the center feels set (checking after 30 minutes). The smaller bowl will bake faster than the bigger bowl and need to be removed sooner. If the tops are getting too brown before the cakes are baked through, cover with foil to prevent too much browning.
  3. About 10 minutes after you remove the cake from the oven, turn out of bowls onto parchment paper. This prevents the cake from sweating and sticking to the bowls.Stick the cakes in the freezer for a few hours or overnight until they are firm.
  4. About 10 minutes after you remove the cake from the oven, turn out of bowls onto parchment paper. This prevents the cake from sweating and sticking to the bowls.Stick the cakes in the freezer for a few hours or overnight until they are firm. Layer the small cake onto the large cake on a cake plate or stand . You can use some frosting on the stand to keep the cake in place if needed. Trim any over hang if necessary. Depending on the size of your Barbie, you may need to add a frosting layer between the two cakes.
  5. Layer with a thin layer of frosting to create a "crumb coat" for the frosting to stick to.Carefully place the Barbie Doll into the cake
  6. Decorate with buttercream frosting using a large rose tip to make roses or use other tips to make different fun designs (see ideas above).
  7. If your Barbie is bare on the top, pipe frosting directly onto the doll to finish off the dress. If your Barbie has a painted-on top, you can leave it as-is (see the Rapunzel cake above as an example), of you can frost over it.

Notes

  • Grease and flour bowls thoroughly for easy cake removal and ensure shape maintenance.
  • Adjust baking times since smaller and larger bowls bake at different rates; watch for doneness carefully.
  • Use leftover batter to make cupcakes, which can be arranged around the Barbie Cake as additional decoration or servings.
  • Check that the Barbie doll fits comfortably between the stacked cake layers before baking to avoid fitting issues.
  • Nutrition information corresponds to a standard white cake mix with fondant or buttercream frosting; variations may affect values.
