How to Make a Fruit Tray Platter
Description
How to Make a Fruit Tray Platter centers on a large watermelon hollowed out to form a basket filled with watermelon balls and chunks. Around this centerpiece, slices of cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and pineapple are arranged in a visually pleasing T-shape on the tray. To fill gaps and add variety, fresh raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and sliced kiwi are placed between and atop the melon slices, finishing with fresh mint for color and aroma.
The combination offers a balance of sweet, juicy fruits with differing textures, from the firm melons to tender berries. The watermelon basket adds a playful element suitable for festive occasions.
This platter can be made up to a day in advance, covered and refrigerated, then brought to room temperature before serving. Freshness is best maintained by storing in the refrigerator for up to three days. Freezing the fruits separately is possible for smoothie use, and if fruits lack sweetness, a light drizzle of honey can enhance the flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 watermelon large
- 1 peeled seeded, and sliced cantaloupe
- 1 peeled seeded, and sliced honeydew melon
- 1 peeled cored, and sliced pineapple
- 2 cups raspberries fresh
- 2 cups blueberries fresh
- 2 cups blackberry fresh
- 4 cups strawberries whole, fresh
- 3 kiwi peeled and sliced
- 10 mint leaf fresh
Instructions
- Prepare the watermelon centerpiece for the fruit platter. Please watch the video to see how I made the basket.
- Using a melon baller, scoop out as much of the watermelon as possible. See how to make my Watermelon Agua Fresca.
- Fill the watermelon basket with any leftover large chunks of watermelon, and then fill the rest of it with the watermelon balls.
- Prepare the cantaloupe, honeydew, and pineapple.
- Start by placing the watermelon basket in the center of your selected fruit tray.
- Next, place the sliced cantaloupe in a T shape around the watermelon basked and press down on it to help fan it out.
- Repeat the process with the honeydew melon and the pineapple.
- To help fill in the gaps, place the assorted berries and sliced kiwi in between where the sliced cantaloupe, honeydew, and pineapple are.
- Finish by adding some fresh berries to the basket of watermelon balls and then garnish with some fresh mint leaves.
Notes
- Prepare the fruit platter up to 1 day ahead, covered and refrigerated.
- Bring the platter to room temperature about 1 hour before serving for best flavor.
- Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; freeze fruits separately if intended for smoothies.
- Leave strawberry tops on for added color contrast.
- Any large round tray can be used for assembling the platter.
- If fruits are not sweet enough, toss them in honey to enhance sweetness.
