How to make Homemade Taco Shells

Report
This recipe shows how to transform corn tortillas into crispy homemade taco shells shaped like bowls. Heating tortillas briefly makes them pliable, then baking in a cupcake pan molds them into a sturdy container to hold taco fillings. The result is crunchy, fresh taco shells without the need for deep frying, allowing customization and cost savings.

Description

The Homemade Taco Shells recipe uses six corn tortillas made pliable by briefly microwaving them to prevent cracking when shaped. Pressed into the inverted cups of a metal cupcake pan sprayed with non-stick spray, the tortillas take on a bowl shape during an 8–10 minute bake at 375°F. This baking method crisps the tortillas into a firm shell suitable for holding taco ingredients.

The simplicity and control over texture ensures a crunchy shell with a toasty corn flavor. Cooling shells on the oven rack maintains crispness. Using cooking spray on both sides helps baking without sticking and encourages even crisping.

These homemade taco shells save money compared to store-bought options, allow for fresh preparation without preservatives, and accommodate various taco fillings. The bowl shape is ideal for loaded tacos or taco salads, making them versatile for meals.

  • metal cupcake pan
  • cooking spray non stick

  3. Flip over the cupcake pan.
  4. Spray both sides of the corn tortillas and push into the pan to form a "star" bowl, like you can see in the picture above.
  5. Bake in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes.
  6. Allow to cool slightly on oven rack and then fill with your favorite taco ingredients!
  7. You can use paper towels if needed while cooling.

  • Microwaving the tortillas briefly softens them to prevent cracking when shaped.
  • Use non-stick cooking spray on both sides of tortillas and cupcake pan to avoid sticking and ensure crisping.
  • Bake shells at 375°F for 8–10 minutes until golden and firm.
  • Cool the shells on the oven rack to maintain crispness before filling.
  • This method creates taco bowls that hold fillings securely and save money compared to store-bought options.
