How to make Jell-O Worms! A Spooky Halloween Treat!
Description
The process starts by stretching the bendable ends of several straws to create flexible molds. These straws are packed tightly into a container such as a milk carton, which serves as the mold holder. Gelatin powder and unflavored gelatin are dissolved in boiling water, cooled to room temperature, then combined with heavy whipping cream and a few drops of green food coloring to achieve the desired color and opacity.
The mixture is poured into the arranged straws and refrigerated overnight to set fully. Because of the straws’ flexible nature, rolling the straws on a hard surface helps begin to release the set gelatin. The worms are pinched and gently pushed out with fingers, resulting in worm-shaped gelatin pieces with a smooth, slightly creamy texture from the added cream.
This treat is designed for Halloween parties or themed events where novelty gummy-like snacks add to the atmosphere. The technique uses household items and simple gelatin mixtures to make an engaging, edible decoration or sweet.
Ingredients
- 2 packages raspberry gelatin dessert 4 servings each
- 3 packages gelatin ¼ ounce each, unflavored
- ½ cup heavy whipping cream
- 3 cups water boiling
- 15 drops green food coloring
Instructions
- Stretch out the bendy part of all of your straws. Prepare your "worm mold" by placing the straws into your container. If using a milk carton, do not cut it, just open the top. The tighter they are packed in, the better.
- Place the Jell-O and unflavored gelatin in a bowl. Add the boiling water and stir until dissolved.
- Let cool to room temperature. Add whipping cream and food coloring. Gently stir.
- Pour the Jell-O mixture into the straws. Refrigerate over night.
Removing the Worms
- Pinch out a little piece of Jell-O from one end of the straw (about ½") Place 2 or 3 straws on a hard surface and with a rolling pin (on the end that you have pinched out the Jell-O) roll the end of the straw until the worm starts to come out of the straw.
- Once the worm has started to move out, it's easy to use your fingers to just push the worm out the rest of the way.
