How To Make Stromboli (Recipe)
Description
The process starts by rolling out pizza dough into a large rectangle, then spreading marinara sauce across the surface with a border. Fresh basil leaves are layered over the sauce, followed by cooked crumbled Italian sausage, chopped green olives, separated artichoke hearts, and shredded mozzarella cheese. The dough is then carefully rolled lengthwise into a log, ensuring the seam is on the bottom for stable baking.
The Stromboli is baked at 400°F after brushing the exterior with melted butter and a sprinkle of cracked black pepper. Baking yields a golden crust while melting the cheese and warming the fillings inside. Letting the Stromboli rest for 10 minutes before slicing helps set the filling and prevents sogginess.
This Stromboli can be enjoyed as a convenient meal or party snack. Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to a week in an airtight container, making it practical for make-ahead feeding or snacks.
Ingredients
- 1 pound pizza dough buy or make from scratch
- 1 jar marinara sauce 16 ounces
- 1 bunch basil fresh
- 3/4 cup artichoke hearts drained and separated
- 1/2 cup green olives pitted, chopped
- 1/2 pound Italian sausage crumbled, cooked
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
- 1 tablespoon butter melted
- black pepper cracked
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Roll out the pizza dough on a piece of parchment paper, into an 11 X 15-inch rectangle.
- Spread 1/2 cup marinara over the dough, leaving a 2-inch border around all sides.
- Top the marinara with fresh basil leaves. Layer the sausage, olives, artichokes, and cheese over the basil leaves.
- Then lifting the parchment paper, gently roll one short end toward the other short end, creating a log with the seam facing down.
- Place the parchment paper on a baking sheet and set the loaf in the middle. Brush the loaf with melted butter, then sprinkle with pepper. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown. Allow the Stromboli to rest 10 minutes before slicing.
Notes
- Serve Stromboli with extra marinara sauce for dipping to complement the filling.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container and enjoyed within one week.
