How to Make the Perfect BLT
Description
The Perfect BLT consists of four slices of toasted sourdough or artisan bread layered with crispy bacon, thick slices of ripe tomatoes, and fresh lettuce leaves. The bread is spread with mayonnaise to add creaminess and moisture, and the ingredients are seasoned with salt and pepper to enhance the flavors. The bacon is cooked to crispness either in a skillet or in the oven, offering a robust savory component.
This sandwich combines crisp textures from the bacon and toasted bread with the juiciness of the tomatoes and the crunch of the lettuce. The mayonnaise adds a smooth contrast that binds the flavors together. The preparation is straightforward but attention to the browning of the bacon and the freshness of the vegetables makes a noticeable difference in the overall result.
The BLT can be served as a hearty lunch or light dinner. Cutting the sandwich in half makes it manageable to eat and presents the layers attractively. Toasting the bread by broiler or toaster enables control over the desired level of browning.
Cooking bacon in the oven on parchment-lined baking sheets allows even crisping with less mess, and the bread can be toasted under the broiler as an alternative to toasting. Adjust mayonnaise quantity to taste for desired creaminess.
Ingredients
- 4 lices sourdough bread or artisan bread
- 8 lices Bacon
- 2 large tomatoes ripe
- 4 leaves lettuce iceberg, bibb or romaine
- 4 tablespoons mayonnaise more to taste
- salt
- black pepper
Instructions
- Wash lettuce, dry, and slice it into thin shreds if desired. Slice tomatoes into thick slices.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the bacon in a single layer. Cook, turning occasionally, until crisp. Drain the bacon on a paper towel lined plate.
- Place the bread in a toaster and toast until lightly browned, butter if desired.
- Spread each slice of bread with 1 tablespoon mayonnaise.
- Top with bacon, tomatoes and lettuce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Cut in half and serve.
Notes
- Bacon can be baked in the oven at 400°F on parchment-lined baking sheets for 18-20 minutes to achieve even crispness with less splatter.
- Bread slices can be toasted about 4 inches from the broiler for 3 minutes to get a light toast if you prefer broiling over using a toaster.
