In-N-Out Cheeseburger Sloppy Joes

In-N-Out Cheeseburger Sloppy Joes combine seasoned ground beef cooked with butter and onions, mixed with a creamy, tangy secret sauce made of mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, sugar, and vinegar. Served on sesame hamburger buns with layered toppings, these sandwich-style sloppy joes replicate the flavors and stacking of a classic cheeseburger in a saucy format.

Description

The dish starts by browning ground beef halfway in butter, then adding chopped onion, kosher salt, and coarsely ground black pepper. A homemade secret spread sauce blends mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet relish, sugar, and white vinegar to create a creamy, slightly sweet, and tangy flavor that melds beautifully with the savory beef mix. Most of this sauce is stirred into the beef mixture and heated briefly to combine fully.

The sloppy joe filling is then served on sesame hamburger buns with a specific stacking order: bottom bun, reserved sauce, pickles, tomato, lettuce, meat, cheese slice, lettuce again, more sauce, and the top bun. This layering mimics the classic In-N-Out cheeseburger profile but in a saucier, more casual sandwich style.

This recipe offers a hearty, robust flavored meal that balances creamy, tangy, savory, and fresh elements for a satisfying sandwich experience.

Use freshly prepared sauce and prepare buns and toppings in advance to assemble quickly. Butter browning helps flavor and moisture in the ground beef.

  • 1 tablespoon butter unsalted
  • 1 yellow onion , finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper coarse ground

Secret Spread Sauce Recipe

  • 2/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons sweet relish
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons white vinegar

Instructions

  1. Brown your ground beef halfway in your large skillet with the butter, then add in the chopped onions, salt and pepper.
  2. Mix the secret spread ingredients in a medium bowl and stir well.
  3. Add 3/4 cup of the secret sauce to the pan and stir well to combine (reserve the rest for your buns).
  4. Cook 1 additional minute then serve on sesame hamburger bun (stacking order in notes below).

Notes

  • Assemble sandwiches starting with bottom bun, spread reserved sauce first, then layer pickles, tomato, lettuce, meat, cheese slice, additional lettuce, more sauce, and top bun.
  • Browning ground beef in butter adds richness and moisture to the filling.
  • Reserve some secret sauce for spreading on the buns to enhance the flavor layering.
