Indian Raita

Indian Raita is a chilled yogurt-based side dish mixed with finely chopped red onion, green chili pepper, cumin powder, salt, and fresh cilantro. It offers a cool, tangy contrast to spicy meals, balancing heat with the creamy texture of yogurt. The finely diced vegetables add subtle crunch and savory tones that complement the seasoning.

Description

Indian Raita combines plain yogurt with aromatic cumin powder and salt, enhanced by finely chopped red onion and seeded green chili pepper. This mix creates a refreshing, tangy condiment with a slight sharpness from the onions and a gentle heat from the chili. The dish is garnished with fresh cilantro, adding bright herbal notes. It is served chilled, making it a soothing complement to spicy or richly flavored dishes.

The preparation involves simple chopping and mixing, requiring no cooking, which preserves the freshness of ingredients and the cooling effect of yogurt. While cucumbers are often included in raita varieties, this version omits them for allergy reasons but can be adapted to include cucumber if desired. Using plain yogurt allows a smooth, creamy base; if Greek yogurt is used, diluting it with water adjusts the consistency.
