Instant Pot Apple Crisp

Instant Pot Apple Crisp features tender apple chunks cooked just until soft in the pressure cooker, sweetened and spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and lemon juice, topped with a buttery oat and flour crumble crisped briefly under the sauté function. This dish offers a moist fruit base with a spiced, crunchy topping in a convenient, fast preparation.

Description

The recipe uses peeled, cored, and cubed green apples tossed with lemon juice to inhibit browning and preserve freshness. The apples are combined in the Instant Pot with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and water, then cooked at high pressure for 0 to 1 minute depending on desired softness. This ensures apples are tender yet retain some texture.

While apples cook, a topping is prepared by mixing old-fashioned oats, additional cinnamon and nutmeg, melted butter, flour, and brown sugar. After pressure cooking and quick release, the topping is sprinkled on and gently pressed into the hot apple mixture, then cooked again on saute mode until bubbling and crisped slightly, developing a warm, crunchy contrast.

This apple crisp is suitable for serving warm directly from the pot and can be a comforting dessert or snack. The pressure cooking reduces traditional oven times and eases preparation.

Ingredients

Servings

Apple Crisp:

  • 8 apple I used small/medium green apples - cored, peeled, and cubed into 1.5-inch pieces
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup water

Topping:

  • 2/3 cup old fashioned oats not instant
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 4 tbsp butter melted
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Remove the skins from the apples, leaving some on. Remove it from no more than 1/2 of the apple, otherwise, they will get too mushy when cooked.
  2. Cut the apples into thick cubes and add them to a large bowl. Toss with lemon juice.
  3. Add the cubed apples to the Instant Pot with the rest of the Crisp ingredients and stir together.
  4. Close the lid and close the steam valve. Cook on high pressure for 0 or 1 minute. If your apple chunks are smaller, to ensure they don't get too soft then cook for 0 mins. It still takes time to pressurize so do NOT worry, zero doesn't mean they won't cook.
  5. Cook for 1 minute if you have larger chunks or if you want softer apples. Once done cooking do a Quick Release.
  6. In the meantime, in a medium bowl mix the topping ingredients until well combined.
  7. Open the IP lid and click on saute.
  8. Stir gently the apple mixture and sprinkle the topping on top. Gently push down into the liquid letting it cook until bubbling, for about 1 minute.
  9. Stir very gently and after that turn off the IP.
  10. Serve immediately with ice cream and caramel sauce.
