Instant Pot Brown Rice

Instant Pot Brown Rice is cooked using pressure to yield fluffy grains with minimal effort. The recipe combines rinsed brown rice and water, cooking it under high pressure before a natural release ensures the rice finishes absorbing moisture. This method produces consistent, tender rice suitable as a base for many dishes.

Description

This recipe simplifies brown rice cooking by using an Instant Pot. Rinsed rice is combined with water, then cooked on high pressure for 22 minutes after a build-up time to reach pressure. Allowing a natural pressure release for 10 minutes prevents sticking and promotes fluffiness.

The rice cooks evenly and can be fluffed with a fork before serving warm. Leftovers store well in an airtight container for up to five days. This method offers a reliable approach to cooking brown rice without monitoring stovetop timing or water ratios.

A note advises adding an extra 1/4 cup water if the rice is not rinsed to compensate for retained starch and moisture content.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup brown rice , rinsed
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Combine the rice and water in the bottom of the Instant Pot and give it a stir. Secure the lid and move the steam release valve to Sealing.
  2. Press the Manual or Pressure Cook button and cook at high pressure for 22 minutes. The pot will take roughly 8 minutes to come to pressure before the cooking cycle begins.
  3. When the cooking cycle is complete, allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes. (In other words, don't do anything right away.) When the screen reads LO:10, move the steam release valve to Venting to release any remaining pressure.
  4. When the floating valve in the lid drops, it's safe to remove the lid. Fluff the rice with a fork, and serve warm. Leftover rice can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
