Instant Pot Chicken Wings
Description
Instant Pot Chicken Wings are cooked initially in the pressure cooker with a steamer basket to retain moisture and cook the chicken thoroughly in a short time. After pressure cooking and natural release, the wings are patted dry and tossed with BBQ sauce before finishing crisping in the air fryer or oven. The air fryer step caramelizes the sauce and browns the wings evenly by tossing halfway through cooking. This two-step method prevents sogginess while developing a glossy exterior and soft interior. The wings offer a sweet and smoky balance of flavors, enhanced by the BBQ sauce used in the recipe.
The recipe is suited for serving as a flavorful snack or appetizer and is flexible for crisping methods with either air fryer or conventional oven depending on equipment available. Careful patting dry before saucing and attentiveness during air frying ensure an even crisp with minimal burning.
The notes encourage rating the recipe but do not add cooking tips.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds chicken wings
- 2 pounds chicken drumettes
- ½ cup (125ml) BBQ sauce (we used Sweet Baby Ray's Original BBQ Sauce)
Instructions
- Pressure Cook Chicken Wings: Pour 1 cup (250ml) cold water in Instant Pot Pressure Cooker. Place a steamer basket in Instant Pot, then add chicken wings and drumettes in the steamer basket. Close lid and pressure cook at High Pressure for 5 minutes + Full Natural Release. Open the lid carefully.
- Preheat Airfryer: While Instant Pot is naturally releasing, dial airfryer to 400°F and set the timer to 10 minutes. If Using Oven: While Instant Pot is naturally releasing, preheat oven to 450°F.
- Pat Dry Chicken Wings: Remove wings and drumettes from Instant Pot. Pat them really dry with paper towels.
- Apply Sauce and Place in Airfryer: In a large mixing bowl, toss wings and drumettes with ½ cup (125ml) BBQ sauce. Add chicken wings and drumettes in the airfryer basket. Airfry until sauce is glossy and caramelized (~5–10 mins). After 2 - 3 minutes, take out the airfryer basket, then give it a toss to make sure the chicken wings brown evenly. If Using Oven: Place chicken wings and drumettes in a single layer on a wire rack in a baking tray. Bake until the sauce is glossy and caramelize (~8–15 mins).
Notes
- Pat wings thoroughly dry before saucing to help achieve better caramelization and crispness during air frying or baking.
- You can finish the wings in an oven if you don’t have an air fryer, preheating to 450°F for similar crisping results.
- Handle the BBQ sauce toss gently to coat evenly without damaging the wings’ skin.
