Instant Pot Sona Masoori Rice
Description
This recipe highlights cooking Sona Masoori rice in an Instant Pot. The rice is washed until clear, then combined with water—two parts water for one part white rice in the Instant Pot bowl. After sealing the lid, high pressure cooking for four minutes produces tender, fluffy white rice with a nice separation of grains. The brown rice variation uses longer cooking times and the pot-in-pot method to prevent sticking, ensuring the firmer grains cook evenly.
The natural pressure release after cooking allows the rice to finish steaming gently for best texture. The rice can be fluffed post-cooking to separate grains for serving. The light texture makes this rice suitable as a neutral accompaniment to various main dishes.
Adjusting the water slightly to 2.5 cups per cup of rice softens the texture, useful for preparations like curd rice. Adding ghee and salt before cooking adds aroma and flavor. The cooking time remains steady even when increasing quantities.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sona masoori rice
- 2 cup water
Instructions
- Start by washing the rice well till the water runs clear. Then drain the remaining water and add the rice to the Instant Pot steel insert.
- Add water to the rice and close the lid with vent in sealing position.
- Start the instant pot on high pressure for 4 minutes. When the instant pot beeps, let the pressure release naturally.
- Open the Instant Pot and fluff the rice gently with a ladle or fork.
Sona Masoori Brown Rice Method
- Follow the same method as above, pressure cook for 22 minutes at high pressure.
Pot-in-Pot Method
- In a steel bowl, add 2 cups of water for one cup of Sona Masoori Brown rice.
- Before placing the steel bowl inside the Instant Pot, add 1 cup of water and then place the trivet. Then place the steel bowl with rice on top of the trivet. Close lid with vent in sealing position.
- Set the Instant Pot to pressure cook (manual) mode. 6 minutes for white rice or 25 minutes for brown rice.
- Once the pot beeps, let the pressure release naturally. Then fluff the rice with a fork. Sona Masoori Rice is ready to be served.
Notes
- Increase water to 2.5 cups per cup of rice if you prefer softer, more tender rice.
- Adding a teaspoon of ghee and salt before cooking enhances aroma and adds subtle flavor.
- Even when cooking larger quantities, keep the same cooking time for consistent results.
